iDEAL is becoming Wero: what does it mean for you?

Written by Elena

What is Wero?

Wero is a European payment solution. It is owned by a group of major European banks, including the Dutch banks behind iDEAL. With Wero, you pay online directly from your bank account and approve the payment in your banking app.

With Finom, you can use Wero to pay online shops and services from your business account:

  • Fast. Payments are based on SEPA Instant, so the merchant usually receives the money within seconds.

  • Secure. You confirm each payment in the Finom mobile app with strong customer authentication. You never share card details or your IBAN with the shop.

Why is iDEAL becoming Wero?

More and more online shopping happens across borders. Until now, each country had its own local payment method, and iDEAL worked only in the Netherlands. Wero brings these together into one European payment method, so you can pay in other European countries as easily as at home.

Wero is owned by European banks, and your payments, money and data are protected under strict European rules. Payments are based on SEPA Instant, so the money reaches the merchant within seconds, any time of day.

Wero is also more than a replacement for iDEAL. It is designed to grow, with new ways to pay and new features coming over time.

Is paying with Wero different from paying with iDEAL?

Not really. Paying with Wero is as easy as paying with iDEAL: you choose your bank on the Wero payment page and approve the payment in your banking app. The main visible difference is the yellow Wero branding.

  • On a computer, scan the QR code on the Wero payment page with the Finom app.

  • On your phone, choose Finom on the Wero payment page. After your first payment, the Wero payment page remembers your bank, so your next checkout is faster.

For step-by-step instructions, see How to pay online with Wero from your Finom account.

When will this happen?

Wero is being phased in gradually from 2026. iDEAL is planned to be phased out by the end of 2027. You can keep paying as usual throughout the transition.

What will I see at checkout?

Until the end of the transition, you may see one of these options at checkout:

  • iDEAL | Wero

  • Wero

You can pay with Finom using any of them. If you see both iDEAL | Wero and Wero, we recommend choosing the yellow Wero button.

Do I need to do anything?

No. The switch happens automatically. You don't need to sign up or install anything new; just keep the Finom mobile app up to date.

Can I pay with Wero in other countries?

Yes. You can pay wherever you see the yellow Wero button at checkout. Every Wero payment is processed by Finom, whichever country the shop is in.
