International transfers in euros

Written by Elena

This article is for our clients using international transfers with GB IBAN

Payments in euros worldwide

With Finom, you can send international SWIFT transfers in euros to more than 150 countries. worldwide.

To complete your transfer, you will need to provide the recipient’s:

  • IBAN or account number

  • BIC/SWIFT code

  • Full recipient address

For SWIFT transfers, intermediary banks may be involved in processing the payment. These banks can charge additional fees, which may be deducted from the transfer amount. As a result, the recipient may receive less than you originally sent. To minimize the risk of such deductions, you can choose the OUR option during the payment process. This option ensures that all transfer-related fees are covered on your side, so the recipient receives the full amount (additional charges may apply).

Delivery times for euro transfers can vary depending on the destination and the banks involved. In general, transfers may take anywhere from a few hours to 5 business days.

Payments in euros within the euro area

Most countries in the European Union use the euro as their national currency. For payments within the euro area, SEPA transfers in euros are the standard and most efficient option.

Examples of SEPA payments in euros

  • Germany → France

  • France → Italy

  • Italy → Netherlands

How it works

When you create a SEPA transfer in Finom, the system will automatically show you the available payment methods at the final step before sending. Depending on the recipient bank, you may see:

  • SEPA

  • SEPA Instant

Important considerations

  • SEPA transfers are typically faster and more cost-effective than SWIFT.

  • SWIFT is generally not recommended for payments within the euro area, as it is usually more expensive and may take longer.

Payments in euros to the UK

You can send euro payments to recipients in the United Kingdom, with different transfer options depending on the recipient bank.

What to expect

  • Compatibility check:
UK banks typically support incoming SEPA transfers. During the payment flow, Finom will automatically check whether the recipient’s bank can accept SEPA payments. If not, you will be notified and prevented from proceeding with that method.

  • SEPA Instant availability:
Even if SEPA is supported, SEPA Instant is only available if the recipient’s bank supports instant processing. This means instant delivery cannot always be guaranteed.

  • SWIFT alternative:
If SEPA is not available or suitable, you can send euros via SWIFT. However, this option usually involves higher fees and longer processing times.

Payments in euros to non-euro countries in Europe

Some European countries use their own local currencies but are still part of the SEPA network. This allows them to receive euro transfers even though the euro is not their national currency.

What this means for your transfer

  • You can send euros using SEPA (and sometimes SEPA Instant) to recipients in these countries.

  • Recipients typically have an IBAN, just like in euro area countries.

Important considerations

  • Availability check: During the payment flow, Finom will automatically verify whether the recipient’s bank accepts SEPA payments. If not, you will be notified and prevented from proceeding with that method.

  • SEPA Instant is not guaranteed: Instant transfers are only possible if the recipient’s bank supports SEPA Instant.

  • Bank-specific restrictions: Even if a country is part of SEPA, individual banks may still restrict incoming euro payments. It is recommended to confirm with the recipient whether their bank accepts SEPA transfers in euros before sending the payment.

  • Fallback to SWIFT: If SEPA is not available, you can still send euros via SWIFT.
